ELA Outcomes
Students will listen, speak, view, represent read and write at different times and in different ways. These outcomes will be met through weekly spelling tests, daily grammar assignments, novel studies, oral projects and thematic units. Students will also take part in a number of activities that will develop their critical thinking skills.
Spelling - Words Their Way
You will be given a set of words on the first day of the week. On Monday and Tuesday, you will sort these words into specific categories based on sounds, letter blends or patterns. On Wednesday, you will sort and record the set of words into your spelling scribbler. Thursday is the day you get to study for your test by playing different games and participating in different centers. Finally, Friday is the day for your Spell Check.
Home Reading
Students will be encouraged to practice reading at home. They are welcome to use books from their personal library, school library or community library. As well, students should be reading a variety of different texts. I also encourage students to read a loud to someone in order to work on their fluency and expression. Parents, please ask your child questions about what they are reading and have them summarize what is happening in their book. This will allow to help build comprehension.
